Skills Exchange Program

Real skills. Real experience. Shared for the next generation.

Some of the most valuable trade skills, the kind you can’t learn in a textbook, come from years on the job. Many participants in the Community ReLaunch program have worked as tradespeople, journeymen, and skilled labourers, developing practical knowledge in areas like framing, masonry, carpentry, and more.

The Skills Exchange Program is designed for:

  • Community ReLaunch participants who want to share their expertise and mentor others.
  • Young adults, new trades workers, and peers seeking hands-on learning from experienced professionals.
  • Community members interested in learning practical maintenance and repair skills to use at home or in their careers.

What We Do:
We create opportunities for experienced tradespeople to mentor and train others, passing on the tips, tricks, and problem-solving skills that come only from years in the field. Sessions focus on real-world application, community building, and giving back.

Types of Skills & Activities:

  • Construction Basics: Framing, drywall repair, flooring installation.
  • Masonry & Finishing: Bricklaying, stonework, tiling techniques.
  • Carpentry & Woodwork: Cutting, joinery, and repairs.
  • General Maintenance: Seasonal upkeep, tool use and care, troubleshooting common household issues.
  • Worksite Best Practices: Safety, efficiency, and problem-solving methods developed through years of hands-on experience.

Who Can Engage Our Services:

  • Community Centers & Nonprofits wanting to host skill-sharing workshops.
  • Youth Training Programs preparing young adults for trades careers.
  • Local Schools & Employment Agencies looking for hands-on career exploration activities.
  • Community Members interested in learning maintenance skills for personal use.

Why It Works:

  • Preserves valuable, experience-based skills that aren’t taught in a classroom.
  • Builds participant confidence by recognizing their expertise and leadership.
  • Strengthens community resilience through shared knowledge and mentorship.

Impact Goals:

  • Give experienced tradespeople meaningful ways to contribute to the community.
  • Equip the next generation with practical skills for home and work.
  • Foster peer-to-peer learning that builds respect, connection, and opportunity.
